The long arm of the law

Germany has just introduced a new anti-doping law that could see those caught sent to prison for up to three years. Very good. A scare tactic, no doubt, and sending a strong message. But it will probably result not in convictions and athletes caught, but in a general decline in performance by German athletes on the world stage.

Unfortunately, this is a law that doesn’t impact everyone. Only those athletes “earning a significant amount from sport” will be investigated, tested and punished. All those pumped up amateurs out there can breathe easy. They can still dope, win a few triathlons and avoid prison. Good for them.
